Strategic Role Overview
A rapidly scaling financial technology ecosystem in Abu Dhabi is actively seeking a Principal Fintech Software Engineer (Java) to lead the architecture, engineering, and modernization of mission-critical banking and payment systems powering next-generation digital financial services.
This is a high-impact role designed for senior engineers who understand that fintech development is fundamentally about trust architecture—where reliability, latency, compliance, and resilience directly influence customer confidence and institutional success.
You will be responsible for building and optimizing enterprise-grade backend systems supporting payment orchestration, transaction routing, merchant acquiring, digital wallets, settlement engines, open banking integrations, card issuing platforms, treasury operations, and real-time reconciliation frameworks.
The successful candidate will operate at the center of platform engineering, regulatory technology, and financial systems innovation—working closely with architects, DevOps specialists, security teams, risk stakeholders, compliance leaders, and executive product owners.
This is not a standard software engineering position; it is a core infrastructure role where every engineering decision carries operational and financial consequences.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-availability Java-based backend services supporting large-scale financial transaction ecosystems
- Build secure and scalable microservices architecture for payment gateways, wallet platforms, acquiring systems, and merchant settlement infrastructure
- Engineer resilient API layers for banking integrations, financial partners, open banking services, and embedded finance platforms
- Optimize transaction throughput, low-latency execution, and fault tolerance across high-volume financial systems
- Implement event-driven architecture using enterprise messaging frameworks to improve transaction orchestration and system reliability
- Strengthen platform security through encryption frameworks, tokenization strategies, access controls, and secure financial data handling
- Collaborate with infrastructure teams to improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, container orchestration, and production observability
- Support fraud detection integrations, dispute workflows, and financial audit traceability mechanisms
- Lead code quality governance, architecture reviews, technical mentorship, and engineering best-practice enforcement
- Participate in production incident response and root cause analysis for critical payment operations
- Improve database architecture and performance across transactional systems with high concurrency demands
- Contribute to strategic digital transformation initiatives across banking and fintech platforms
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field
- 6+ years of professional backend development experience with advanced specialization in Java
- Strong expertise in Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Hibernate, RESTful APIs, and microservices architecture
- Deep experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or enterprise transactional systems
- Hands-on knowledge of Kafka, RabbitMQ, or event-driven distributed architecture
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD automation, and cloud-native deployment environments
- Strong understanding of payment systems, acquiring flows, reconciliation frameworks, and transaction lifecycle management
- Knowledge of PCI DSS, secure coding standards, and fintech cybersecurity requirements
- Prior experience in banking technology, fintech platforms, digital payments, or financial services is strongly preferred
- Exceptional debugging, performance optimization, and systems-thinking capability
