Backend Platform Engineer – Digital Banking & Financial APIs (Remote – Saudi Arabia)
Position Overview
A next-generation digital banking platform in Saudi Arabia is expanding its backend engineering function and is seeking a Backend Platform Engineer to build foundational services powering financial APIs, digital onboarding systems, and core banking integrations.
This role is less about maintaining systems and more about engineering backend platforms from first principles, enabling seamless financial experiences across mobile, web, and partner ecosystems.
Strategic Objective
You will contribute to the creation of a modular backend platform that supports digital banking capabilities such as account management, payments, lending integrations, and API monetization frameworks.
The focus is on platform engineering, enabling other teams to build financial products rapidly and securely on top of your backend systems.
Primary Responsibilities
Platform Engineering & API Development
- Develop reusable backend services that serve as building blocks for digital banking products.
- Design and maintain API gateways and developer-friendly financial APIs.
- Implement API rate limiting, authentication (OAuth2), and versioning strategies.
Core Banking Integration Layer
- Build middleware systems that connect modern applications with legacy core banking systems.
- Develop data transformation pipelines ensuring consistency between systems.
- Manage transaction orchestration across internal and external financial services.
Scalability & System Design
- Engineer backend systems for horizontal scalability and high availability.
- Apply domain-driven design (DDD) principles to structure financial services logically.
- Implement caching strategies and database sharding where necessary.
Data Engineering & Processing
- Design pipelines for real-time and batch financial data processing.
- Enable analytics-ready data structures for downstream risk and reporting systems.
- Ensure compliance with data residency and financial data governance regulations.
Technology Environment
- Languages: Python (FastAPI/Django), Kotlin, or Java
- Frameworks: Spring Boot, FastAPI
- Infrastructure: Azure or AWS, Kubernetes, Docker
- Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB
- API Tools: Kong, Apigee, Swagger/OpenAPI
Ideal Candidate
- 4–8+ years of backend development experience with exposure to fintech or banking systems.
- Strong grasp of API architecture and platform engineering concepts.
- Experience working with financial data models and transaction systems.
- Ability to translate regulatory and business requirements into scalable backend solutions.
