Position Overview
A rapidly growing fintech banking organization is seeking a visionary Principal Backend Developer – Payments & Banking APIs to lead the engineering of high-performance financial transaction platforms and open banking infrastructures.
This role is designed for a backend engineering leader who understands the complexity of payment ecosystems, real-time transaction processing, API security, and large-scale distributed systems. You will be responsible for building resilient backend services that power digital wallets, merchant payments, instant transfers, card processing, account-to-account payments, and embedded finance solutions.
Working closely with cybersecurity teams, cloud engineers, product managers, data scientists, compliance specialists, and enterprise architects, you will help shape the organization’s long-term technology strategy while delivering secure and highly scalable financial platforms.
Primary Responsibilities

Architect and develop enterprise-grade backend services for fintech banking platforms.

Build scalable payment processing systems and transaction orchestration services.

Design secure APIs for open banking and third-party financial integrations.

Optimize system performance, reliability, and fault tolerance.

Implement event-driven and microservices-based architectures.

Collaborate with DevOps teams to enhance deployment automation and platform resilience.

Ensure compliance with financial security standards and regulatory requirements.

Conduct code reviews and establish backend engineering best practices.

Support high-volume transaction processing with low-latency architectures.

Lead technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex production issues.

Mentor engineering teams and contribute to organizational technical excellence.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Information Systems.

Master’s qualification preferred.

Minimum 8 years of backend development experience.

Extensive experience within fintech, banking, digital payments, or financial technology environments.

Strong knowledge of distributed systems, API security, and high-availability architectures.

Proven experience leading backend engineering initiatives.
